"In 1817 a fiery preacher called Norman McLeod left the Scottish Highlands for Nova Scotia with a band of devoted followers. So began one of the great migration stories of the nineteenth century. After 35 hard years in St. Ann's, McLeod, now in his seventies, set out again with 800 followers - this time to the infant colony of New Zealand, settling in Waipu, Northland."
