Fifty Years on the Saskatchewan

Jefferson, Robert

1929; Canadian North-West Historical Society; stapled booklet; 160 pp. "Being a history of the Cree Indian domestic life and the difficulties which led to serious agitation and conflict of 1885 in the Battleford locality as written by Robert Jefferson after fifty years' research and service." Volume 1, No V - part of a series "Chapters in the North-West History prior to 1890 ... related by old timers." Chapters include: I. The Trail from England to Red Pheasant's Reserve, Battle River, 1876-1878; II Indian Life in the First Years of the Reservations; III A Period of Agitation and Conflict Including the Activities of Poundmaker, Big Bear, Riel and the Fateful Events of '85. Paper wraps are worn and stained, and corners bumped - one dog-eared page. Contents are intact, but there is some wear to the spine. Otherwise, the contents appear clean.

1923; Thomas Allen; soft cover with boards and dj; 149 pp. Nellie McClung "was a Canadian feminist, politician, author, and social activist. She was a part of the social and moral reform movements prevalent in Western Canada in the early 1900s. In 1927, McClung and four other women: Henrietta Muir Edwards, Emily Murphy, Louise McKinney and Irene Parlby, who together came to be known as "The Famous Five" (also called "The Valiant Five"), launched the "Persons Case," contending that women could be "qualified persons" eligible to sit in the Senate. The Supreme Court of Canada ruled that the current law did not recognize women as such. However, the case was won upon appeal to the Judicial Committee of the British Privy Council [which was] the court of last resort for Canada at that time." (from Wikipedia). This is her first book. Significant wear to the dj; previous owner's name on ffep; contents appear clean. This is a hard to find title.

The book covers the Piapot and District area of south-west Saskatchewan and includes chapters on the following locations: Piapot, Beaver Dam, Black Hills and Kealey Springs, Cambrai, Cardell, Carnagh, Caswell, Crane Lake, Edgell, Last Chance, Lynn Grove, Manville, Mitchener, Moorehead, North Ridge, Petain, Prairie Star, Sidewood, Skibbereen, Skull Creek, Star Butte, Stillwater, Stony Knoll and Wapashoe. There are also brief stories on many families who settled there. The end papers are 1922 area maps. Many black and white photographs throughout and the contents are clean. This is a very heavy book.
